Todd Meadows, a sailor from the fishing reality show Deadliest Catch, died at the age of 25 after falling into the Bering Sea in late February, authorities revealed.
According to a statement from the U.S. Coast Guard, Meadows was aboard the fishing vessel Aleutian Lady when he fell into the sea about 275 km north of the coast of Dutch Harbor, Alaska.
“He was recovered unconscious by the crew approximately ten minutes later. First aid and resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful, and the crew transported the deceased to Dutch Harbor,” a spokesperson for the service told Entertainment Weekly.
The spokesperson added that the Coast Guard is still investigating the situation, as it routinely does in cases of “maritime occurrences and accidents to determine their causes and initiate the necessary corrective actions.”
Captain Rick Shelford, a star of the reality show that follows fishermen as they battle stormy seas and brutal weather to make a living, shared the news of Meadows’ death on Monday (2) in a Facebook post.

Shelford noted that Meadows was “the newest member of our crew” and that he “quickly became [part of] the family.” He described the day of Meadows’ death as the “most tragic in the history of the Aleutian Lady in the Bering Sea.”
“His love for fishing and his strong work ethic immediately earned everyone’s respect. His smile was contagious, and the sound of his laughter coming up the stairs of the wheelhouse or across the deck is something we will always carry with us,” the captain said in the post.
“Todd’s love for his children, his family, and his life was evident in everything he did. He worked hard, loved deeply, and brought joy to those around him. Right now, our hearts are broken in a way that words cannot fully express.”
A page on the crowdfunding website GoFundMe was created to support Meadows’ family after his death. The goal is to raise $45,000. At the time of publication of this article, more than $42,000 had already been raised.
